weak cranking and hot terminals???

ok i just found 2 ohms meters in my garage...1 digital and 1 not. there are alot of setting on both. how do i use it to check the starter? please give details. any help would be greatly appreciated

Go from the commutator to the shaft ------------Report the #'s you get on the various OHMS scales if you like.------------------You are looking for INFINITY on this reading.------------------Means no continuity whatsoever from commutator to the shaft.

That's great checking the OHMS from the commutater to the shaft, but what if the windings in the armature are shorted together???

what setting do i put the meter on the dial on? and when you say commutator.....thats the flat surface facing down? the surface that the brushes rub against? and when you say shaft....the small shaft coming out of the bottom...correct?

Correct.-------------------If windings got hot enuff to short together they will also be shorted to ground !!!-----------------I talked to a motor rewinder about these starters and after explaining my " expertise " he said ----------" you will be all right , you know stuff "

Sorry. But I started out in an Auto-Electric shop 50 yrs ago and was burned on two outboard starters back then by not using a growler and just an ohmmeter. My Mentor gave me a good lecture about this. If i would have used a growler I would have found it. Are you old enough to know what SUN TEST EQUIPMENT was ??? They were the best for checking starter mtrs.

ok guys before we get in a pissing contest........i dont have a growler but i do have an ohmmeter. so can someone tell me in detail how to do this?

The best advice I could give you is take it to a rebuild or auto-electric shop and have them check it. A good shop wouldn't charge you anything.

ok i took both of them apart. both can use new brushes so i changed them. i used an ohmmeter which i have no idea how to use. one probe was on the shaft and one on the commutatore. first starter was filthy and smelled slightly burnt. the readings were -4.00 for all segments. the other was clean and didnt smell at all and the readings were 1 for all segments. which one is good? is either good?

For this many posts and shops all over the country to test any starter, altenater, generater. They all do it for free. Here there are conflicting views,,,,I thought you by now would have had it tested.Have you tried both starters? does either turn the flywheel with enough umphpaa to start it?? If not their bad!! and most likly need new windings. I get my starters rewound for 35$$ Or a new one for 67$$.

like i said...i know nothing about continuity. so the one with the -4.00 is shot and the one with "1" is good?

dew2. Some people just won't listen. I have no idea what his numbers mean. If he had a Stevens AT-101 I could tell him right away what's going on. O'Well.

Well for continuity if it were good he'd be reading ZEROS.But a shop is undisputable!!
