" Hey Richard....

On the water pump change out...
On the right side of the motor under the carbs, you can see where the shift rod hooks up..Free the rod from the shift lever...Then...

First, Take the prop off...Take the trim tab off,and under there you will see 2 bolt heads...Remove the larger one.. You can see 4 bolt heads, 2 on each side, where the lower unit bolts to the mid section...remove them..be careful, for the lower unit might slip down on you, and its a little heavy..Then you can now replace the water pump..thr drive shaft goes thru it.... When going back, make sure that the shift rod has not turned much..(1/2 turn max.),and that the water pump tube gets inserted into the water pump, should you miss getting it in, then no water to the power head, and will have to do it all over again...!!VRO.find the oil line to it,remove and unplug the electric plug, and thats it..That whole unit is your fuel pump also...Dont forget to mix your gas and oil from now on...! On the side of the lower unit you will see two plastic screens...remove those, and then you will be able to get to the two nuts that you will see there...This is where the shift rod hooks up...Remove the upper connector.., then remove the four bolts, 2 each side, and the nut you will see up in front of these bolts..every thing else is the same as before...sorry about the wrong info...I was thinking V-4 and up.. " What is the Model # of your motor? If it is a 1989 40 hp, non commercial, the easiest way I found to get to the shift connector is to split the lower motor pan. This allows easy removal and replacing the shift pin/screw. "
