Does anybody know what the other water temp sending unit does right next to the water Temp sending unit that the water gauge is hooked up to on the engine? It sits right next to the active one that the brown wire is connected to for the temp guage. It presently has no wires connected to it. This is off a 1986 Mercruiser I/O 470 170 HP Motor. Just curious what it is used for.

Thanks!}}

That would likely be part of the alarm circuit that sounds an audible alarm in the event of high temp or low oil pressure.
It should have a tan/blu wire running to it from pin #4 of the 10 pin plug. This same tan/blu wire is connected also to the oil pressure switch which should be adjacent to your oil pressure sender down by the oil filter. They are wired in parallel and both complete the circuit to ground to activate the alarm.
Someone may have disconnected it if the sender is shot and the alarm is sounding continuously.
