"Hey guys, I have a 1989, 3.0 mercruiser. I was out the other day and my water temp. gauge went dead. What tests can I do to tell me if it is the sending unit or the gauge itself that is the problem? Or is there anything else I should test? Thanks for any help."
 
"Try jumpering the sender wire

"Try jumpering the sender wire to ground at the engine. If the guage pins it is likely the sender. If not, its likely the guage or wiring.

There are 2 senders at the T'stat housing. Its the one that is wired with some color other than tan/blue. The tan/blue one is your alarm switch. You can test it also by jumpering it to ground. The alarm should sound.
