water temp 4.3 gen2 alpha 1

Fishing this morning I found a sand bar that stopped boat completely. Got the boat off and fired up then noticed temp was running up tp 175 then back of to 155. Kept doing this the rest of the morning.Used to run a steady 160 before. Any Ideas why? Sand in the thermostat maybe? 4.3 gen 2 alpha 1
 
probably,I'm no boat mechanic but have hit some pesky sandbars. I keep a infrared heatgun on board, aim for the thermostat temp sensor and the water circ pump, some people also aim at the risers, hooked up muffs and flushed engine with water then pulled thermostat, opened blocked drains and flushed thru thermostat housing with hose, replaced thermostat with new one, took boat to marina,dipped drive in water and let get to temp to make sure impeller was working. all was good.
 
Pulled all water hose, block drain plugs which had alot of sand then themostat which was fouled with sand. Flushed block with hose then fired up motor with muffs on to flush more. Put all back and fired up on muffs an motor runs 130 constant. Looks like new themostat is in order to get back to 160.
 
is my understanding that when hooked to a set of muffs it will supply enough water to cool down the engine weather the impeller works or not, that is why I dunked the drive in the water at the launch to make sure the impeller is working. hopefully that's all you need is a T-stat.
