Water Tank vs Muffs?

I need to run and test my 5.7 mercs (new Alpha 2's) before launching the boat.

I am thinking I would prefer sitting the legs in a barrel rather than use muffs to get an honest reading on raw water flow as I have installed a pair of flow detectors. I won't be using higher rpm's, I'll leave that for after launching.

Any pros and cons on either method?

If props are not installed, can I shift the legs without damaging anything, or are the weight of the props important?

Thanks

Everything is new....new legs and transoms.

Flow detector is a sensor you put in the raw water tube between the transom assembly and the heat exchanger on a closed cooling system, or engine on raw water cooled engine. It detects no or low flow if you picked up seaweed or a plastic bag over your intakes. Saves overheating, boiling over and melting your impeller/pump. Example: google Aqualarm Flow detector

ditto I wouldn't think it would matter if the props are on or off you are only checking water intake flow....hey that aqualarm is a nice little warning device.Tells you when you have a flow restriction and is adjustable from 1.5 -10 gal. goes on the incomming raw water hose inline it has an alarm and light that mounts to your dash. not cheap tho $95.00

But I wonder if I can check the shifting without the props? I think I will leave that for the launching just to be safe.

Shopping around online got me the aqualarms for $41.00 each.....the internet is your friend!

Yes it is...cheap insurance as long as you or the driver knows what the hell it means and what to do...let someone drive who doesn't know what a warning light is and the alarms are useless. Like my better half...honey that light has been on for two weeks or the needle has been pointing at the "H"...what does that mean?

You need the props on if your going check the shift cable it has to be in the water and under a load.

hey guy is your wife a blonde...mine is o'boy

Flow detectors....By the time the engine overheats, boils over, and sets off the engine overheat alarm, the damage is done....impeller ruined, pump housing distorted from heat (Alpha 1), possible distorted exhaust flappers from exsessive heat...on and on...not to mention having to pull and split the leg, and buy a new pump, impeller, gasket kit ..on and on...and how about the expensive labor cost if you aren't a handyman!

If these flow detectors would like they say they will....they will pay for themselves very very quickly.
