"I have a 1990 forester I/O with the 4.3 omc cobra. This past summer I have had it in 2 different marina's 3 times because of a vibration (this will be the 4th time). Every time I have taken it in they say the same thing..."there is water getting into the rubber boot where the bearing is which is taking out the gimble bearing". One of the marina's says that the water could be coming in from the motor side and that they would have to pull the motor to fix it. The other marina says the water can't be coming in from the motor side because the engine compartment is bone dry every time I pull the plug. My question is are there any other possible ways water can get to the gimble bearing? or better yet, what are the possible ways that water can get to the gimble bearing? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!"

The most common cause is a hol

The most common cause is a hole or tear in the rubber bellows itself. Has this been changed as well?

No it has not been changed. Bo

No it has not been changed. Both places inspected it for holes and tears and found nothing. Why they didn't just replace it while they had it tore down that far is beyond me. I think that I will have them replace it this time. What are some of the other possible ways water can get in there?

I can't think of any other

I can't think of any other way for water to get in there. Have you checked your drive lube to see if there is any water in there? I'm pretty sure there is just a 1 way oil seal to keep the oil in the drive but I don't think there is seal to keep water out of the drive as there should never be any in there. What about the u-joints themselves are they starting to get rusty as well?

The u-joints looked really goo

The u-joints looked really good. There was no signs of rust and no excessive amount of "slop". The drive lube looked good as well. I am going to take it in tomorrow so I will keep you all posted as to what the deal is.....hopefully!!!
