why is there water spitting from the center hole in the thermostat cover?

Sure we know----------------The diaphragm for the poppit valve is leaking or ruptured altogether.-------------------FIX IT PRONTO !

No applause needed -----------just send money or beer !-----------It is a vent hole to allow the diaphragm to move and do it's job.-----------------I have seen people who just do not know about these things, plug those holes with RTV for some reason.
