Water is comming out of my #4 spark plug... On my 76 i6 115.. WhAt do I do now. Where do I start?
I have anoth i6 115 sitting up that i have been using for parts .. The power head looks good but no starter o check for compression the flywheel on it turns freely so it's not seized.. What do I need to start doing to rebuild or check for damages

Im gonna guess that since I will have access to all of the other cylinder gaskets I should replace these aswell, when I replace said gaskets with that off can I check or things? Give the area I'm taking off a good cleaning?

Here's a tip for getting those zillion bolts out without twisting most of them off in the block:

1. Use (buy/ rent/ borrow) an impact gun

2. Use a 6 inch extension between the gun and the socket, so you can "help" it along.

3. With the gun on its LOWEST setting, start twist on the extension with your hand as you go, noting when/ if the socket starts to turn. This could take several minutes of rat-tat-tating away, so be patient.

4. When the bolt starts to turn, twist even harder on the extension and out she'll come.

Using this technique, I've removed 90 % of the bolts from severl Mercs without breaking more than a couple--and that's a LOT of bolts!

PS: Resit the urge to turn up the torque; that will merely snap the bolts off.

What gaskets do I need to order? I looked on Iboats and found a crankcase to cylinder gasket? Is that the right one? Serial number is 4397501 mercury 115

If that's where the water is coming from, you'll also need to have the aluminum part machined for flatness or it will leak again.

Below is a photo of what the parts look like--this is a Merc 850 four, but the design is similar.

Go to this site (Outboard, Mercury) and plug in your motor info to find the parts you need.

One of those pieces shown in my photo is bolted to the block and is WATER COOLED. A leak at the gasket here shoots water into the cylinder(s).

ok, finally got around to get started on taking it apart and identifing either if it is a gasket or cracked head. From all the power head diagrams i cannot fully grasp what side of the motor i need to be taking apart. What is the process i need to follow on getting these parts off to check the gaskets? judging by all the clutter on the outside. i am going to take the outter bracket off, then what? Does anyone have pictures of this process or a powerhead dissassembly thread?
