"where should the hot water be

"where should the hot water be comming from when i run my boat with the "ears" on it. when i run it, the water from the garden hose is spraying everywhere and I can't tell if it is actually going into the engine. it doesn't over heat while in the lake but while doing test with the engine running on the trailer, i don't want to over heat the motor cause i can't monitor the gauge while preforming tests????????? it is an alpha one with a 180 mercruiser inline 4 cyclinder if that helps at all"

"Most ot the water will come o

"Most ot the water will come out the bottom gimbal exhaust ports. If all is working right it won't be HOT but luke warm since water from the block mixes with cool water from the T'stat hsg. Some fine spray and vapor will come out of the prop hub. It is normal for water to spray out from under the ear muffs due to the water pressure from the hose. The only downside of using muffs is that the garden hose creates the water pressure for the engine. Therefore you can't tell if the OD impeller is producing sufficient pressure to push cooling water thru the engine. I use a deep plastic tub to immerse the OD to test the impeller; the size tub that fits a 1/4 barrel of beer in it after I drink the beer

not really worried about impel

not really worried about impeller cause it doesn't get hot in the lake just didn't know where it was supposed to come out of. where are the gimbal exhaust ports on an aplha one? maybe a pic will help if NE 1 has one plz

Maybe 3:30,+ 8:30.............."

"ok i think i found the exhaus

"ok i think i found the exhaust ports, they look like 2 little 1 inch holes on the bottom but i'm getting no water from anywhere and my gauge goes to 250 degrees rigth after i start it but the engine still feels cool to the touch so i purchased a new gauge and sending unit. after i swap it what should i check if thats ok."

i also want to know which hose

i also want to know which hose is the intake for the water to water cooler so i can take if off and run the ears on the outdrive to see if maybe i can flush it out in case there is something blocking or slowing the water down. TY in advance

Like Guy and Bondo said, you should get most if not all of your cooling outlet water out the two holes you saw in the transom assembly near the bottom. There holes are normally under water when the boat is in the lake, so you don't see them operate. You only see them when running on the muffs in the driveway.

You should also see a small stream of water coming out the prop, but it will be minimal by comparison.

The reason most comes out the transom assembly holes is that your exhaust downpipe is baffled so that most water is separated and directed to these transom plate holes.
As Guy said the water coming out should be a strong flow, and should be warm to hot to the touch, but should not be steaming hot.

You need enough hose flow to the muffs to have excess water squirting out the sides of the muffs. This assures that there is more water supply than the pump needs to pump. Contrary to some advice, there is no way you can overpressure your cooling system with a standard set of spring loaded muffs. The excess pressure and water flow bleeds out the sides. So don't be shy with the water flow.
If you send me an email to [email protected] I will send you a picture of a typical muff run test.

thank you very much cause i am

thank you very much cause i am getting nothing out of those holes. i guess i should just back flush the system to be sure that tere is no impeller parts in there and replace the impeller

"PLEASE HELP!! I HAVE A 1995

"PLEASE HELP!! I HAVE A 1995 MERCRUISER 7.4 MPI. FOR SEVERAL DAYS I HAVE BEEN CRANKING THE ENGINE WITH THE MUFFS, GETTING GREAT FLOW AND GOOD COOLING, GETTING READY TO GO BACK TO MARINA. YESTERDAY I DEGREASED AND WASHED THE ENGINE. NOW SUDDENLY WHEN I CRANK THE ENGINE, I GET NO WATER RETURN. COULD THE TWO BE RELATED, OR DID MY IMPELLAR JUST HAPPEN TO GO BAD BETWEEN RUNNINGS???"

Welcome Evan:

You should start a separate post to get the most responses. Your good waterflow was due to the hose waterpressure. Impeller may have been shot already.
