"I have a 88 bayliner with a omc 3.0l engine, cobra outdrive. It will not pump water when in a bucket at a idle reveded up it will spit water but not a steady stream, but it will with muffs on. I have replaced the water pump on both the engine & lower unit & checked the seals. PLease help from anyone"

"How deep is your bucket? Consider this, When your boat is sitting in the water your raw water pump is fully submerged and therefore fully primed. If you have the lower unit in a bucket you are probably just barely covering the water intake ports. When on muffs you are forcing water up to the pump with pressure from you hose.
Was the old impellor intact when you took it out? If not, be sure you clear the passages of any pieces that could cause blockage."

"yes the old impellor was intact. I just bought the boat, and I put it in the water & it would not pump water, so I put the new water pumps on, I also put a new manifold on because the old one was cracked"

What indication do you have that it was not pumping? Did you take the RW hose loose at the T/stat housing with it idleing? Have you tried this with the new impeller?

yes I did take the hose off the t stat. What I found was the lower unit seal had a cut in it. Thank you for all your help

"This sounds exactly like my problem. I tried convincing the mechanic of the same thing but he keeps telling me its the manifold!
Jerry, from your last comment, it sounds like you got it working. If so, I'll be doing the exact same thing. However, I have very limited experience taking the lower unit apart. I do have a Chymer manual but details are limited in removing the outboard/installing. Does anyone have an explicit manual on doing this?"

Pull of your outdrive from the

Pull of your outdrive from the boat hook a hose to the flush system on the engine and let it run and clear up the engine then run a hose thru the outdrive and make sure the suction and discharge are clear on the outdrive. if this doea not work replace your impeller and make sure your rubber line from the bottom of the gimbal that is the suction line from the outdrive. this should solve your problem
