"installed a new water pump it

"installed a new water pump it seams to be working great but noe my motor wont shift into gear, an older gentleman at the dock thought it need to be in gear when we put it back together, we had it in netrual, so do I need to drop it back down place the shifter in gear then replace it any help would be great"
 
When assembled the shift splin

When assembled the shift splines were not assembled correctly.You need to verify one way or another.Lower unit and control in nuetral or lower unit and control in forward when assembling.Have some one operate the controls before installing all the nuts.They often move into forward when you are not " looking " and you think that the lower is in nuetral.

"I like to use neutral since the LU will "click" and stay in neutral. So, put both LU and control box into neutral and make sure the plastic shift rod guide is installed in the midsection to properly aline the shift rods."
