I am new to this so looking for help in replacing my water pump and separating the lower unit from my 18xd without damaging anything.
 
the shift linkage needs to be disconnected from behind the carb. Then take.the bolts out of the lower and remove the trim tab. I dont remember if there is a bolt under there so check to make sure.
 
Got it but my impeller looks ok I am going to replace it anyway because it has been sitting for a long time. I can't find the thermostat on my motor where is it located I thought that might also be the cause of overheating.
 
You may not have a thermostat. If the pee line comes out above the #1 plug it does not have a thermostat. If the pee line comes out of a small access cover to the left of the #1 plug you have a thermostat. Do a compression test before anything if it overheated the motor nay be toast. Those motors do not like to be overheated.
