how do i disconnect the water pump shaft i cannot get lower unit apart

It really would help if you say what model your " belch fire special " is.--------------Not all outboards are the same.

HGBandy.... As Racerone states, we need either the model number of your engine OR the exact make, year, and horsepower of it if known.

it is a 1976 evinrude 70 hp mod #70673d

5 bolts on the lower unit + 1 hidden under the trim tab-------Then the shift rod connecter found under the bottom carburetor.--Look for it from the starter motor side.

Get some 1/4 " drive tools as it makes life easier. Especially flex sockets.
