water pump trouble

The water pump does not "pull" water... it "pushes" (pumps) water. The water level must be above the pump as it is not a self priming pump.

If it pumped water in the past.... install a new water pump assembly. Seal the plate to the lower unit and seal the impeller housing to the plate.
 
HI ALL, I am looking for some help. I recently arrived at my boat to find it full of water... bad day... Contacted the insurance company and sent it to the shop who tested and sourced the issue to the raw water pump. We had the boat serviced 4 months ago and the mechanic specifically tested the water pump and reported whilst she repaired the impeller, wear plate gaskets and other components. The insurance company is saying that the raw water pump bearing seal wore and allowed water to enter resulting in corrosion. They are therefore saying that it is a wear and tear item and therefore not covered by insurance. My argument is that as a boat owner, i did everything that was reasonable to conduct as a responsible boat owner (i.e. spring full service including water pump) and that this should be covered. The mechanic insists that there was no issue with the pump beyond what was repaired in the spring. Does anyone know under what circumstances this damage could have occurred over the last 4 months other than wear and tear? I can't understand it! Thanks in advance!

#1 Start a new thread rather than tagging onto a 4 year old discussion. It makes answering your question easier.

#2 What kind of engine is this? Are you talking about an I/O or Inboard? There is absolutely NO WAY the water pump in an outboard is going to fill the hull of a boat.....especially when it's just setting at rest. That's the total idea idea of an outboard......the complete engine and drive assembly is OUTSIDE of the transom.

If you have an I/O or Inboard you're better off asking your question in the correct forum. Look here and find the discussion forum that matches your boat's propulsion system.
