installing a whole new water pump kit and noticed the upper half of the housing did not have a seal at the top like the one i pulled off did..

I have what is listed (bought separately from the kit) as a upper water pump seal, but there is no way i am getting it in there its got a hard plastic ring around the outside and cant be "smushed" in there.. am i missing something here?

There should be a large soft square oring..after u assemble the housing and tighten all the nuts you slip that oring down the sahft and it sits on top of the housing. It is there to stop exhaust gases from entering the impeller housing..
Are u shure you got the correct pump kit?

What they refer to as a upper water pump seal should be the seal you see in the base NOT the upper cover.

Just the squareish round ring goes on top of the cover per Jack

interesting, the old one I pulled off definitely has a seal on the upper half of the pump housing. The seal shown in the picture did not come with the kit, I ordered it extra thinking i was going to need it. The one that DID come with the kit is the cintrifugal slinger, that's the one you are talking about right? The kit does have it just not on the shaft in the picture.

Everything in the kit is identical to what I've pulled off the drive so I'm pretty sure I got the right parts

You may be looking at melted plastic that oozed up from a overheat or a incorrect install previous.
There is no seal that goes inside the upper cover

correct, the rubber slinger goes on the shaft and pushed to the top of the pump cover

Good call man, it must be melted plastic from the last impeller burning up like you said. I was assuming it was a burnt up seal that I was lookin at in there and part #18-3013 "upper w/p seal". Threw me off. Now I know.

Thanks for the knowledge!

Later than 1980 Merc outboards dispensed with that top seal altogether, adding that square O-ring to sit atop the housing.
