Water pump seal orientation

The top seal in the water pump

The top seal in the water pump for my 1964 75hp Evinrude goes which way? Lip up or down? Seems to me that if it's lip up then water will always collect in the seal. The bottom seals are two seals installed lip to lip with grease in between so water can't collect in them.

"Hi there, Welcome to Marine Engine!

I take it you are reffering to the oil/lip seals that are located under the water pump base plate that seal off the drive shaft into the first housing.

These seals are fitted back to back. The top one (the one you insert first) will be facing up so you can see the small spring that keeps the lip around and against the shaft. The second seal, one you cant see, is fitted facing down, the spring around the lip faces down. SEE THE DIAGRAM, and dont worry about residual water around the top seal, the housing etc has small reliefs cast into them that allow left over water to drain.

Callum

"Thanks Callum, Now that I look at your diagrams I can see that my recollection was wrong. I did install those bottom seals properly. The one that I'm questioning now is on top of the water pump. There's a small cap that screws down on the water pump housing with a seal. I'm thinking it should have the lip towards the pump to keep pump pressure, not necessarily to keep lake water out of the pump. Am I right? The seal goes under the cover in this orientation.
