water pump replacement question

1981 90 hp evinrude i replaced the water pump impellar and now i have some water leaking out between the lower unit and the upper unit mating plates.. it still pumps water up but water is leaking between the mating surfaces. right at the front of the lower unit (closest to the transom)
could this be the pick up tubes not properly aligned? or maybe the gasket isnt sealing?
