Water Pump Question

" Hello! I have a Merc 110 9.

" Hello! I have a Merc 110 9.8 horse. I had it out for the first time this year. While cruising around I noticed very little to no water coming out of the side pee hole....but a fairly steady splash coming out of the exhaust port.

Last year I remember a steady stream coming out of the pee hole, but I didn't use the boat until later in the year when the water was warmer. Now the water is quite cold...like 40 degrees. Would the cooler water cause less water coming out of the pee hole because of the thermostat?

Even at full throttle for 5-10 minutes today...the most I ever got out of the pee hole was a tiny trickle...I'm a bit worried. Why would I be getting water out of only the ports by the exhaust and not the pee hole?

Also, does anyone know if the Merc 110 9.8 has an auto - overheat shut-off?

Thanks!
Mike W "

" Mike,

" Mike, I don't know about the overheat shut off but I can tell you I've run my Evinrude 9.9 all winter long here in north Idaho in water down to 34 degrees and its allways had a full stream out the pee hole, hopefuly someone can be of more help than I. Bob "

"Mike.... Engines not only pum

"Mike.... Engines not only pump water, they also pump salt and minute particles of debris. That small water telltale outlet is very easily clogged which happens from time to time. With the engine running on a flushette, run a solid piece of wire up that small outlet to clear whatever is clogging the passageway. Hopefully, that cures your problem.

The wire

" Thanks a bunch!

The wire trick worked! Now I get a nice steady stream within a couple seconds of engine running.

I tucked the little piece of wire in my tackle box for future use!

Thanks, now I can fish for walleye instead of standing cursing over my outboard in the driveway!

I just bought a '94 Evinr

I just bought a '94 Evinrude that gets hot when it idles causing the temp alarm to trip. Takes about 5 minutes. Run up the rpms and it works fine. There is a stream of water running all the time but I don't know if it is less than normal. Also noticed water gurgling from somewhere on the top of the engine. Run hard with the cover in place and hot water drips from the cover. The engine didn't run much last season.

Someone mentioned the wire trick to me. Does anyone know where this water is coming from?

" I have a Merc 50 hp. there is a small manufacturers hole beside the #1 sparkplug. It leaks water. Can someone assist me in determining if this is a winter plug or what? I just bought the motor and it has been sitting for several years, outside in Canadian winters. Can't get water out the pee hole without reving motor. "
