"I have a 198?'s Chrysler

"I have a 198?'s Chrysler 140 HP.This is my first Chrysler engine. I dont know if that is a good or a bad thing. I did got a new water pump installed it is definatly getting water up in the engine now. My question is, How hot should the water be that is coming out? I ran it for about 1-2 min on the Ear muffs in the driveway and stuck my hand under the stream of water coming out of he exhaust, and it was like hot bath water, Nothing that would burn you just really warm, Is that normal?"

"Mark, should be nothing more

"Mark, should be nothing more than luke warm. But before we go any further - were you doing anything more than letting it idle while on the muffs? If you revved it up at all that would explain the "hot water".

Muffs can barely supply enough water to operate at idle speed. If that's all the motor was doing you may want to first invest in a new thermostat and see if that helps..."

"I may have revved it up once

"I may have revved it up once but not for long maybe a sec or less. It was mostly Idle. I was thinking about the thermostatas well. I have a seloc manual for the engine. It tells me how to change the thermostat and shows it to me on a diagram, but it doest tell me specifically where it is located, could you tell me?"

"Making me think now [img][/im

"Making me think now
The 140 Chrysler was a 4 cylinder (inline) I think.

If you look just to the left and slightly above the top spark plug the thermostat cover should be there held on by 2 bolts (the bolt heads facing back towards you just like the spark plug)..."

"Thanks,Yes it is a inline 4.

"Thanks,Yes it is a inline 4. I will have a look tomorrow and see if I can locate it. One More question, How fast should the 140HP chrysler be running on the back of a 17.5 foot pro craft fish and ski. I know its hard to tell me a speed but is there a range? I dont think it is running as fast as it could but I could be wrong. I have never had a 140HP that was a 4cyl engine. My Merc 150 is a 6cyl"

"Mark, to start with your 140

"Mark, to start with your 140 Chrysler is most probably rated in Brake Horsepower which was common until about 20 years ago. So by todays standards it's probably closer to a 120 or 125 horse.

Aside from all that, my best guess assuming that the motor is running decently, is propped correctly, trimmed right, weather conditions good etc, I would expect it to push that particular rig along (carrying a couple adults, gear, junk, fuel etc) at somewhere in the mid to high 30's (maybe 34-37 mph).

Most of the fish/ski hull designes in that length (16-18 feet) are only capable of about 40 mph no matter what you hang off the back of them."

"Thanks, I got ya. I am not ve

"Thanks, I got ya. I am not very found of Chrysler Motors. Seems like they make them sound better then they really are. Motor is running good, I have tried trimming in all positions. Seems to only run about 30ish with two people on it. As far as prop goes I am not really sure, I do know that it does have a really sharp prop, The ends are really sharp and will cut you like a razor, I dont know if that is normal or it is just wear. I use to have a astro 18ft fish and ski with a Merc 150 on it and it did 55-60MPH... I guess I am just use to that speed, so when I use that boat it doesnt seem fast."

"Sounds like the prop has been

"Sounds like the prop has been filed at home to clean up dings - if so, might be time to look for a replacement - that tends to unbalance them in addition to removing some of the surface area, in effect, making the prop "smaller"."
