"Hello Everyone, I have a J150stlesb 1990 gt150-
and am replacing water pump and all I have is Seloc manual and it says between housing and base plate to use a sealant but does not state which sealer. I would like to use the correct sealant E/J product or otherwise.
Thank You in advance!!!"

"David, I have always used plain old permatex #2 (non hardening) gasket sealer. Just a very thin coating on the gasket and you should be good to go.

Make sure you clean the mating surfaces meticulously. Any scratched surfaces will be filled in by the Permatex sealant.

Hope this helps."

"According to the pro's you are never to use Permatex on an outboard. I'm with Mike, I use it all the time and have never had an issue. Further, OMC's gasket compound in the can with the brush looks an awful lot like watered down permatex."

"Sleeper:
According to the OMC service manual You are supposed to use Sealing compound on almost everything except cranck case sealing surfaces (Gel seal II) and intake manifold gaskets (dry). Do not forget all screws going into casted parts as water pump screws , head screws etc. Permatex Aviation seems to be closer to the Sealing Compound. What is a no-no is to use silicone/rubber based sealants on any paper gasket."

"Morton and Sleeper. Thanks f

"Morton and Sleeper. Thanks for the input. Both permatex avaiation or type 2 non hardening can be used. Aviaition sealent is better for very thin coatings (bolts, thin gaskets, etc.). The issue I always come up with is when parts have been scratched inadvertantly, and a more heavier compound is required. When new parts are mated at the plant, aviation is the way to go. When they have been pulled apart a few times and some scraping, gouging and other scratches are evident, use #2 non hardening. EIther way, you will be in great shape. Merry Christmas guys."
