Water Pump problem !!! HELP

Using water ear muffs. No stream of water coming out, not even a drop. Changed water pump impeller. The old impeller looked perfectly OK but I replaced it anyway. I am sure I did the replacement correctly. Still no water coming out. While the lower unit was removed, I unhooked the water hose where the water should come out of the cowling and blew air through the hose and it came out of the metal tube that hooks the the impeller housing. That means there are no obstructions from the water pump all the way through the motor. Still no water coming out. Makes no sense at all. I've researched everywhere and here's what I found
1. It's normal for these motors to not pump water using the muffs. (I don't think that's possible)
2. The new impeller installation was not correct. (not likely)
3. The thermostat is closed (what?, never heard of one on an outboard motor)
4.There's a nylon washer under the power head on some models that melts and blocks the water flow. (I blew air all the way from the motor cowling through the motor to the pump with no problem)

I am completely stumped. Any help is greatly appreciated !!!

There lots of outboard motors that have thermostats !----Test it in the lake / river and see if it pees like a racehorse.

Never had one with a thermostat or heard of it. All my motors have always pumped water as soon as it started. Never too old to learn something new. You think it needs forward motion to pump water or will work sitting still ? If it does, I'm fixin to learn something else. Every motor I've owned has worked with the muffs or sitting still in the water. I'll give it a try, just hope I'm not hauling it all the way to the lake for nothing. It might not be soon but I'll try to let you know what happens. Thanks for the input !!

Most modern outboard have a thermostat, but they will still let water out the tell-tale while closed. The tell-tale is just a small percentage of the water pumped. There are a few possibilities. Is there any chance that the woodruff key that locks the impeller onto the shaft is not healthy allowing the shaft to spin but not the impeller? Where the earmuffs correctly positioned over the inlet grills? I'd try immersing it in water as racerone says and see if it flows.

I really appreciate all the inputs. I'm getting ready to take try another set of muffs then use a 55gal drum of water and then (if required) remove the lower unit again to double ck. the impeller installation. I will post the results as soon as I can.

with lower unit off, take a hose and put it directly on the tube where the waterpump connect to. Water should come out the pee hole when you do that.

Problem solved

Tried water muffs with round cups and everything worked fine. The ones that didn't work had rectangle shaped cups. Either my bro-in -law didn't place them correctly the first time or they didn't seal good enough. Think I'll blame this one on my bro-in-law ha ha!! Thanks again for the suggestions and education.

Seen that happen with an Evinrude I was forced to work on. Ended up using the old bucket, which is far better since the motor's water pump is doing the pumping (not the garden hose). Much better test.

Good point... That's what I wanted to do but couldn't find a container big enough so figured I'd try that other set of muffs. Think I'll try to scrounge one up for next time. A 55 gal drum cut in half should work great.

Right. Just don't hook the motor to it--I've seen people do that and it scares me! Use a saw horse or something stronger.
