Water pump not pumping

My engine is 1962 40 HP Johnson. I borrowed a hose adapter to hook up water to engine intake BUT no water when started come out hole above. My question here i guess does this engine have to be actually submerged more in water for pump to work like a barrel rather than just the intake. Meaning this will not self prime like newer ones

The main water intake is the screen behind the prop.----So yes it needs to be in a barrel or boat floating in the lake.----Hopefully you did not damage your new impeller !

How long did you run it? I have rigged up adapters for these with success, but it's best to put them in a large container. I have a little cattle watering tank I use often. Back boat over, lower motor....fire up. Motors that I can carry that are not on a boat, hang on a 50 gallon drum. This is a "true" test of your water pump.

Was working on getting it to run again. Actual run time was maybe 5 minutes tops 3 times trying to adjust throttle. I did however have a hose on over the side screen on side behind prop. so today i'll get barrel and hope for the best. Thank you all again
