I have just re started my AQ 151C in preparation for the season and have noticed a water leak which seems to be coming either from the raw water pump or the fresh water pump. Engine was run with a hose connected to the rubber elbow, which connects the engine to the leg, sucking water via the raw water pump, from a tank placed besides the boat. I only ran the engine for about 10 minutes and on inspection did not notice any change in the level in the heat exchanger. Does the fresh water pump have a telltale hole thru which water can leak out if the pump seal fails? Should I strip both raw water and fresh water pumps just in case? Delivery of the raw water pump seems adequate and the engine did not overheat during the trial.Your valid suiggestions are more than welcome!!

"Lawrence, the water circulating pump (fresh water pump) has a tell-tale that indicates when it leaks. My advice is to leave it alone unless it is leaking, in which case you may want to replace it for an automotive pump (it is identical to the marine version but much cheaper).

The raw water pump has a seal that could go wrong, in which case you have to dismantle it to install a new one.

Other sources of water leakage could be the gaskets in the copper pipes going to the raw water pump, to the strainer, the strainer cap, etc.

I think your first aim should be to identify the exact source of the leak instead of shooting in the dark."

Thanks for the advice. I will take a closer look as you suggest. I forgot to mention that the leak is only apparent when the engine is running and also that the exhaust manifold is about 5 years old and always run in sea water. Could it posibly be corroded to an extent that there is excessive pressure build up in the raw water system, causing the leak?
Incidentally, would you know which European model Volvo auto carries the same type pump?

"Lawrence, I believe that the engines in Volvo 244 (85-93) & Volvo (85-92) 740 (8 valve) cars have the same pump as yours. You should be able to find those pumps aftermarket as well."
