water pump kit - where does this o-ring go?

I have a single small o-ring in the water pump kit that is 7/16" od about 0.25 id. It is not for the vent or fill screws, I have id'd the gaskets in the kit for them already.

Does it go to the flush screw at the water pump - shift shaft above the bushing seal - I'm not sure.

When I tore my lower unit apart I made sure I placed everything in sequential order. After everything was disassembled - I see another small o-ring that I didn't recall seeing in my tear-down that was about the same size.

It could be the shift rod, but in my experience most kits fit several motors and I seem to always have a part or two left over

Is it possibly the quad seal for an alpha one drive? Most pump kits fit both Alpha and outboard lower units and have the seals for both in it.

Thanks guys - I just realized I goofed and didn't add my engine info: The kit I bought was for a '65 Merc 900 6 cyl.
