Water Pump Help Please 1978 sea horse 4 hp

"Okay guys, i recently purchas

"Okay guys, i recently purchased a 1978 4 hp sea horse Johnson and got her running. As i said before, i'm not a motor guy but know just enough to be dangerous. I put the motor on a tub of water to test it. Everything seems to be in order accept that i don't see any water returning from the engine. There are little ports on each side of the lower unit. Is this where the water is supposed to come back out of the engine because i'm not seeing any. I'm not letting it run for more than about 10 seconds before shutting it down. Am i hurting anything by doing this?. Thanks for the help to my earlier questions and thanks in advance for any more help. I think we're almost there i hope. By the way, this motor seems to have been well taken care of. New plugs and some fuel and she was up and running."
 
you are prob not hurting it .

you are prob not hurting it . you actually need to run a lttle longer there are a series of holes (small) in back of motor half way down exaust and water will discharge you should be able to touch cyl head at all times

"On the majority of those small engines, the bulk of the water is blown down the exhaust tube and out the exhaust outlet near the propeller.

The small tell tale holes in that exhaust housing allows a spray of sorts to be blown out to verify that water is flowing thru the system. Let the engine run for 60 seconds or so and hold your hand near the spray exit holes. The spray should be pretty warm but not hot enough to burn you.

Having said that, I would suggest that since you just recently purchased the engine that you install a new complete water pump on general purposes. They don't cost that much, and on that engine it doesn't require a rocket science type mentality.

The water pump sits right on top of the lower unit so when runing it, you want that area to be under water."
