"Hi Gang,
A pal took his 80's boat with a M/C 120 hp I/O to a shop to address an O/heat issue. They repl. the drive pump {water pump] along with a T/stat,recirc pump belt etc. On his first run the boat overheated just as before. They now tell him it needs a riser which is clogged. However they tell him that the 2 day old water pump needs repl because of the clogged riser. Can a clogged riser somehow affect a new w/pump. Somehow I don't think so. Any thoughts? Thanks Jon Allen"

Virtually no water thru a clog

Virtually no water thru a clogged riser can't cool the exhaust. Did the rubber exhaust boot on the engine melt? They should look at the exhaust shutter; it may also have been fried. Evidence of an exhaust cooked impeller would be melted upper/lower impeller hsgs.

Jon. You may need an new mechanic. I can't believe that a shop with any experience would change out what they did and not at least do a trial run on muffs to show that there was still a problem. If the riser is plugged (and it probably is) the engine would not have to run for long to begin to overheat.

"Hi Bob,
Luckily it's not my boat. According to the mechanic it was ok on the muffs. It started to overheat on the lake as it came up to speed. Luckily my pal shut it down immediately at 200 degrees.

Thanks Again,
Jon Allen"

Yes the fact that there was a

Yes the fact that there was a water restriction NOT allowing the exhaust to cool would/could do damage to the impeller and housing.

Typical problem with land based marine service places. They cant water test to find the source of a problem and other issues not seen on a hose!!
