water pomp

Hi, I just changed a new water pomp(impeller,base assembly,gaskets) on my 135 hp mercury black max. Everything looks good but air and smoke comes out instead of water from tell-tale hose.Appreciate for any idea that help.

Did you line up the water tube when you Installed the lower unit?

And you put in the impeller dry I hope.

I apply grease on impeller and also into the the new hose box that hold impeller.

Are you running it on a garden hose or is this in the water? Did you service the water bypass/popit valve?

Your not supposed to use grease on an impeller. That would be like putting grease on your wipers for your car. The Impeller has to go in dry. You can use a soapy water mix for installation. But for your engine you don't need to. Use a carb alcohol cleaner and clean the impeller and the inside of the housing. Make sure all the grease is gone. When installing the impeller hold the impeller housing on the top of the impeller and turn the driveshaft clockwise while pushing down on the housing till it drops down.

The grease has no effect on the operation of the water pump. If you greased the impeller and let it sit for a long time the petroleum in the grease would attack the petroleum in the rubber and possibly make the impeller soft or swell. "



I grease every pump I put together and run it the same day....No worries.

Well your doing it wrong then
no where have I read to put grease on an impeller. If anything you should be using a water based lubricant like glycerin or a soap an water mix.

So why would you use grease? That doesn't wash away?

Here's another quote from another Marine site
"IMPORTANT:*Please do not use petroleum based greases or oils as lubes nor use silicone grease. Some petroleum greases are non-compatible with the impeller material and greases tend to get*gummy*in the internals. Stick with glycerin as a lube.

I've never used grease and have had no issues with any of my 200+ customers.

So Blackmax I suggest you clean that impeller and housing and try it again

Directly from the service manual. #11....2-4-C is grease. Grease is not the cause of your problem.
