Water on Spark Plugs

For Petes Sake

New member
My 1978 75 hp Johnson Seahorse is not happy. I found water dropplets on the plugs on two of the three cylinders. I have been informed that I have a leaking head gasket and or the exhaust gaskets. My question: Is this too big a job for a backyard mechanic?

Pete,

No, it's not too big of a job for a back yard mechanic. I too had a '78 with water on my plugs, and am a back yard mechanic (or try to be). I did do the job. I found that it's not too big, but it's big.
What you were'nt told is that it could also be your base gasket. You also need to know that parts may be hard to get (you can always buy gasket mat'l), and that old gasket surfaces are a big issue (pitting and corrosion).Get a manual for your motor and get some advise on surface preparation.

Good Luck
