Water leaking into boat

"I developed a leak in the engine compartment on my boat. The area where the water is coming in is under the exhaust elbow that curves out to the rear of the boat. I did a little troubleshooting and seems like the leak is coming through from the bottom left exhaust port on the housing that holds the lower unit on, (transom housing??)
I filled the bottom portion of the engine compartment with water and noticed that after the water breaches the point where this exhaust elbow exits the boat, water started to come out of the exhaust port , on the left side only (if your facing the rear of the boat standing outside) I cannot find any info or schematics that show the 2 exhaust ports on this housing. I do not know what could be causing the leak and also do not know the travel path of the exhaust port holes. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Mercruise alpha one stern drive / engine is a 3.0 litre 4 cylinder"

"Thanks for the pic Bt Doctur.

"Thanks for the pic Bt Doctur. My 1st guess would be that I might need a new gasket around the water intake and exit ports. Do you have anymore pics of this assembly? The pic that you posted, is this mounted on the outside of the boat? How much work is it to get to this point to change this gasket , if that is my problem?
Thanks"

"whatever work is needed there

"whatever work is needed there ,you will have to pull the drive first, then the engine. The pic is a outer transom assembly. I doubt it`s the gasket unless you`ve hit some big underwater objects so that leaves a corroded hole in the exaust pipe or a leaking O ring seal."

Be very careful and sure....so

Be very careful and sure....sometimes and actually most times it is the short shift cable bellows.

your method of filling the inside up with water is a good tecnique and should help pinpoint the water leak source.

"If it were the short shift ca

"If it were the short shift cable bellows would it leak water into my boat in a particular spot? I can clearly see where the water is streaming into my boat , it's coming in right under the exhaust elbow directly under the exhaust pipe that exits the rear of the boat. When i filled up the inside it did not leak out until the water level got up to that point and the water leaked out of one of the exhaust ports on the underside of the gimbal housing assembly.

Does any of this info help pinpoint what might be leaking?

Thanks"

Can be a hole corroded in the

Can be a hole corroded in the bottom (elbow) of the exhaust J or Y pipe. (In-line or V engine)
Can also be the O ring gasket that leaks.
The two holes on the outside you refer to are to de-preasure the exhaust (less back preasure) when at idle.
To replace you need to remove the O/d or/and slide the engine forward to get acces to the bolts that mount the exhaust pipe.
Do not forget to re-align the engine after remove with an aligning shaft tool.

I think it is corroded

"Had a OMC that the Y pipe was corroded, thought it was the shift cable housing, didn't see it till the engine was out."

"Pulled the engine out tonight

"Pulled the engine out tonight and found a corroded J pipe, it was eaten away on the flange. Thanks for the leads. I'm hoping to be back in the water again very soon!"

"VICTORY !! Had replaced the corroded pipe, put the motor and stern drive back in and tested it out yesterday. Ran great , NO Leaks !!! Thanks to everyone who shared the info."
