Water leak on Mercury 650

Total newbie here,

I received an old boat from a family member with a 1963 Mercury 650 outboard. I've worked with small engines before, but this is new to me.

Water is leaking from this gasket in the provided picture, and I don't believe it is suppposed to be. I honestly have no clue what the rubber gasket at the bottom of the metal rod is, or even what the metal rod is called. Sorry to not have too much more information, but anything would help point me in the right direction.

A leak like that is not a problem. What you're seeing is water that's already left the power head, cooling it, and is now headed out the exhaust. No problem.

PS: With the motor in the water, you'd never see that.

So to clarify, it is a leak that shouldn't be happening though right? Its just not serious.

The problem I am having is that the last time I took the boat out and put it under load, the engine would run for a little bit and then cut off. I'm worried its over heating, but the water coming out the exhaust and tattle tale doesn't seem overly hot. Got any clues?

That much of a leak there is normal. One doesn't usually notice it since that part of the motor is usually submerged.

A new to you boat / motor always needs a new impeller installed !

I feel comfortable rebuilding carbs and fuel pumps, but taking apart the lower unit seems like a big undertaking. I might have no other option though, because I can't find anyone in northern VA that works on 1963 mercurys.
 
Replacing the impeller is no big deal Make sure it is in forward gear before you drop the lower unit. Allways turn the driveshaft clockwise during and after you put the new impeller in and give it a little shot of dish soap before you put the cover on the pump. Carefully line up the water tube and rotate the flywheel clockwise to line up driveshaft splines the shift shaft should line up. It helps to pull the plugs to turn the flywheel those motors usually have pretty good compression. Are you getting water in the gearoil?


Thanks so much! I'll give it a shot and comment if it is a success or if I still get problems. I believe I'm getting a very minimal amount of water in the gearoil.
