Water leak from shift shaft hole

I never noticed before but doe

I never noticed before but doesn't mean it wasn't there. I recently replaced the impeller and was testing the motor with the ears on when I noticed water leaking from around the shift shaft where it enters the lower unit. Is this normal or do I have a problem.

"David, You should post the model and year of the motor. On my '77 Merc 1500, the shift shaft is exposed to the water. There are gratings above the A-V plate and behind the prop where some of the cooling water comes out. If these were plugged, perhaps some water would come out of the shift shaft hole also. Are you getting water in the gear lube?"

"Chris, The motor is a '95 Mercury 75. I have not checked the gear lube yet but that was my next step. I was just waiting to see if anyone had an answer for me first."
