Water Intake Screens

I just bought a boat with a 1975, 70HP Johnson on it. I noticed that the water intake screens are about 30% missing. Is this a problem? Do I need to chance taking it apart and replace them or it is fine to run without them covering 100%?

The other question I have is that there is a hole just to the right of the water intake holes that was leaking water when I started it with the water muffs on....is this hole suppose to be there?

You should install a new impeller.------Install new screen at the same time.------And yes there are water drain holes in lower units.
 
The screens are important and need to be there for proper water pickup. You will destroy what's left of them getting them out, but that's ok. You are putting a new one in anyway.
 
screens are plastic,snap in place,quick removal method i have used many times, heat with torch and pullout with mechanical fingers when still aflame.
