"1976 130d/280 out on the water yesterday stopped engine to go swimming for about and hour noticed that water was in the engine compartment up to the floor so i turn on the pump and headed for the boat ramp. ran fine. once home i looked at tramsum and it looks ok. but noticed gray oil/water coming out drain hole on bottom. cheked oil was barly showing on stick. look at filler cap all gray inside...
i looked at all water lines and all seem to be fine in place and not hanging out..
not sure how water got in boat and oil too.
any ideas

ok i just checked other postin

ok i just checked other postings on oil coolers looks like i need to go get it tested. but i dont have the right socket so i will get on monday and and send unit to shop for testing..
and would a fuilty oil cooler get that much water in compartment too? that was a lot of water

The only way that oil and wate

The only way that oil and water could escape the oil cooler would be an (obvious) hole in the can. This would be accompanied by a pinched O ring and large gap (corrosion) in the O ring seat. The oil cooler should be fairly easy to disassemble and inspect. Remove the end caps. Look for a gap in the area where the top seals to the core and the canister. A "test" won't be necessary for a problem of that size.

"One more thing, due to the oi

"One more thing, due to the oil pressure being higher than the water pressure it is possible that most of the oil was pumped out through the exhaust. As the oil pressure dropped some raw water could have been back flushed into the oil lines."

thank you dennis i will look a

thank you dennis i will look at ends and see but im sure i have no pinched o-ring i have ran this boat with muffs on before and cover off and never seen water leak in this volume. soo im wondering if i have a few thing wrong... oil cooler and maybe transume is bad?
what is a good way to check transume for leaks..
engine was off at ime of water flooding we were just swimming

now that you mentioned it and

now that you mentioned it and thought about it yes.. the oil presser was high on that day but oil leavel was fine right at full mark at start of day...about 70 to 80 on gauge..

"I feel yer pain, I went throu

"I feel yer pain, I went through the same exact thing with a AQ140. Here's my experienced opinion with a lot of help from this board:

Change the oil with new filter. You might as well buy a few cheap ones and a few gallons of oil because you will be changing your oil several times. Every oil change throw some cleaner or a quart of auto trans fliud in. Run it for a bit maybe a few times until warm. Change you oil again. I am on my fifth oil change and I think I finally got the water out of the engine oil. Use a drill pump to get most of the oil out but you will probably want to pull out the drain plug to get all of it out because there will be lots of sludge mixed in. Pull your oil cooler off just to have it tested for piece of mind. It's a very expensive item and knowing you won't have to buy a new one is worth $1000 ($1300 is more like it!). So far so good.

I have a theory that the water got sucked into the pan via the crank seal. Since my incident happened I am getting a lot of oil leaking out of it that wasn't before. It's only place I can think of, I've eliminated every place else; oil cooler, exhaust manifold, cracked block, cracked head. I did all kinds of tests fearing the worse, a cracked block but this engine runs just too damn good and all tests came back in good working order.

Stay persistant I think you will be fine. Also check your fuel tank if it's below the deck. I had a problem with water in there as well. I just sucked all the fuel out and I will refill it with fresh gas tomorrow.

It's been a month and a half since and I think I got all those bugs worked out. Cross you fingers as I am putting on a starter solenoid tonight and giving her a sea trial tomorrow. Good luck.

This board is priceless!"

"Oh yes if you want to find ou

"Oh yes if you want to find out where that much water came from take it back down to the ramp put the boat in the water without the doghouse and you will find your leak. Mine was a loose cooling hose that connected to the oil cooler. When I cranked the engine it was like a fire hose turned on. A couple of three dollar gaskets fixed that problem. Someone before me placed a rubber block in the wrong place which is supposed to support the hose but didn't. Put it back in the right place and no problems since.

Check the diagram below. Number 26 is a rubber block that NEEDS to go where the cooling tube goes through the motor mount or the tube will pop out with any amount of water pressure.

pugetsounder: thank you for yo

pugetsounder: thank you for your reply. i have read many of your postings on some of the things your going through and others as well and have learned a great deal more then i could have by just reading manual and trial and error. thanks

i havent had the time to work on it this week so far but will soon. test oil cooler and get oil clean.
yes this board is priceless
thank you all

You may want to go buy yoursel

You may want to go buy yourself a set of 1/2" large deep socket ASE socket set. I think the oil cooler requires a 1 1/8" the oil pan drain is 1" and the crank bolt is 7/8" or 1". The nut that holds the Alt pulley is something around those sizes too. I bought a set at Harbor Freight for cheap and they have come in very useful on this motor.

I got oil cooler checked is go

I got oil cooler checked is good rings good. changed oil 3 times clean now some water in top of valve cover will keep eyes on that and change oil a few more times.
found where water was coming in it was the shift controll cable leaking out the end inside boat i just zip tied it up higher then water table no more water leaks. how odd....
boat ran great yesterday...
