Water in oil

Hello - I am a 1st time user

Hello - I am a 1st time user 73 twins Chrysler 318

After spring launch the port engine ran very rough. Every time I checked the oil level it was increasing. (not gas) Exhaust is clean

Checked all spark plugs and the first plug at the rear of the engine at the riser was wet. Started the engine and pulled the Spark Plug wire from the Cylinder and there was no change.

Performed a Compression Test on all cylinders and this cylinder read 155 . (Highest was 170) There was a spray of water coming out of the spark plug hole. i assume it was during the compression stroke

The exhaust elbow and riser had been separated. not at the exhaust manifold

I believe that the engine block is cracked. To solve this problem is it possible to insert a sleeve in this bad cylinder

Thanks for your help

"Hey George,

Had similar problems two years ago. Bad exhaust riser causing water to leak in. Search this site for old posts and you will most likely find a solution."

"I'd rule out a failed man

"I'd rule out a failed manifold before concluding a cracked block. Mine manifold failed this spring, and gave all the symptoms you list. It's also possible that it's a failed head gasket, if the failure were between the cylinder and a water passage. In that case, compression is not always low."

"Pull that manifold, make up blanking plates out of 1/4 " steel, and pressure test it. (Fill it with colored water, then pressurize it to 10 pounds.) If it leaks, you'll know. In addition, take a very careful look at the manifold riser gasket--it doesn't take much, ah, poor workmanship here to create a leak--and the water goes right into that cylinder.

Finally, 155 pounds compression is fine, especially with the water diet it's been getting. Fix the problem and it will get even better.

Thank you for your replies.

Thank you for your replies.

It would be appreciated if some could tell me how to perform Pressure tests. What equipment should l get.

I also want to test the Risers and Elbows

Thanks

"When my manifold was leaking

"When my manifold was leaking enough to cause similar symptoms, I could actually see the hole inside the manifold once I took it off. And when I poked around with a screw driver, I found more soft spots. Some spots, I could push right thru the manifold wall with a screwdriver. But I never actually Pressure Tested, since it was pretty clear that I needed new manifolds."

"A good weld shop can make the block off plates to test the manifolds. I used one to test the risers/ elbows as well. Here's a photo:

Took the Elbow and Riser off today and found that the wrong gasket was being used.

My parts have water passages and this gasket blocked them off. Water came out of the exhaust manifold.

Do these parts use a gasket around the exhaust tunnel (?) and if so are gaskets put on both side of the main gasket.

I cannot understand where all the water was going beside into the manifold

Your replies are appreciated

"Two round holes that are used

"Two round holes that are used, plus three slots that are there only for manufacturing. (That's how the foundry gets the sand cores out.) After running a while, the gaskets wilts away where the slots are, opening those holes as well--no problem.

Note that, if water leaks from the round hole at the top (water passage) it will enter the big round hole at the bottom (where the exhaust exits). The gasket has to seal properly or else!

"Hi George,

I've had many Chrysler LM 318's and if i was a betting man....and i am, i'd bet you have a blown head gasket.

I had twin 318's that weren't properly drained and a crankcase full of Milk, ran crappy as described.

Your block could be cracked, but more chances than not what you're dealing with is a water jacket leak into the cylinder.

One or more plugs should be extra clean where the leak is occuring. I would yank that head and get a Felpro blue Gasket and replace. That should take care of it.

And next fall drain your block yourself by yanking block and riser plugs and running a piece of mechanics wire in by hand to poke through all the rust buildup. Then Replace plugs and yank the top hose and fill it with pink stuff.

Hope this helps!"
