"Hello, Thanks for help I own a 36' Carver twin 454/350's Had boat winterize and put it in water last weekend. The oil cooler was cracked u-Tube.Got it welded reinstalled. I started engine and it was fine, I check oil and water is half way updipstick. Also small water leak in eather raw water pump or main water pump.Where do I start."

"Tim,

"Tim,

it ALMOST sounds like the parts you mention may not have been adequately protected from freezing. The leaks you speak of sound too suspicious. Depending on the U-cooler crack, you may be feeding water in from right there. I believe you have some investigating to do."

"You need to get the water out

"You need to get the water out of the oil - sooner is better than later. Its your call if you want to approach the shop that winterized it. If you want to do it yourself, I'd be inclined to bypass the oil cooler, get the old oil and filter changed, and run the engine with fresh oil. You can usually make up an adapter so the dock hose can supply cooling water (female garden hose fitting making it up to a 1.25" hose barb). if you go this route, disconnect the belt on the raw water pump.

"Welding" the oil cooler is a bit much...soldering is adequate but you need to know where its leaking to do any good.

When you get the water out, I'd be inclined to get a new oil cooler. Also, I'd keep an eye on the other engine; if it was a bad winterization, that one may have similar issues."

"Hey guys thanks for the in put,The oil cooler was soldered, not welded. After I reinstalled it. I drained it from the drain at bottom of u-tube.Water was clean and should be as its the inlet from raw pump. But I took off again today and trans side was clean trans oil,But oil side had water in oil. I will take to shop tomorrow to have it pruessure tested.I don't feel that is my problem.Wish it was.I did have one freeze plug drop out and replaced it.At this point I will reinstall cooler and change oil and filter. If it fills back up with water again would like to hear my next move. Thanks"

what's the history on this

what's the history on this vessel? Age?
RWC or FWC? Salt water or fresh water? Original engines? Hour meter readings? How long have you owned this boat?

I'm asking cause freeze plugs just don't 'drop out'...what color was the freeze plug?

"What I wouldlike to know is there any point on finding where the leak is, or do I just junk it get a new motor. Is there a place on the intake that mite be crack, or heads. Can I or should I spend time on it or just except I need a new engine"

"Tim:

Most likely the block

"Tim:

Most likely the block is cracked. Easiest way to find out for sure is to pull the intake manifold. The block will be cracked wide open below it.

Good luck,

Jeff"

"if a magnet will stick, its a good indication the engine isn't original or has been worked on by someone lacking marine engine knowledge.

whether to diagnose and fix it or replace it is solely your choice driven by the time available and your budget amongst other items.

a cylinder leakage test can confirm the blocks condition, probably faster than a partial teardown."
