"I have a 5.0GXi with an SX out drive.
Had the yearly service done, the tech said there
was water in the oil about (1 gal) but none in the oil filter, said this was common if you back up or slow down to fast, the exhaust is on the bottom of the outdrive. Is this true or a bunch of ----. The boat ran and started fine.
So what would have caused this?"

"To me, 1 gallon of water in the oil pan is not normal by any standard. If you slow down too fast, water may reach the combustion chamber, but before it reaches the oil pan it will hydrolock the engine. If, in addition, there was no water in the oil filter, the engine must have been stopped when the water entered the oil pan.

Perhaps you should consider asking the tech to explain how, in his view, could one gallon of water reach the oil pan if it did ingress the engine via the exhaust.

To me, there are not many places where the water could find its way into the oil pan. Some of them are a cracked block, a faulty head gasket, a cracked head, maybe even a perforated oil cooler (if installed). But I have a hard time trying to swallow the story you were given.

Just my opinion."
