Water in my oil

"i have a 1982 mercruiser260 a

"i have a 1982 mercruiser260 and i pulled the dip stick and it of course had oil on it. well, i needed to change oil so i attached the oil syphon and started pulling the oil out of the motor. well when i did this i pulled about 3 gallons of water out with it. no if the dip stick showed only oil when i pulled it where the hell did the water come from? i was thinking that maybe one of the exhuast valves might be open and i pulled the water in one of the exhuast manifolds out threw the oil filler. does this make sense or should i be concerned with a bigger problem? the motor ran strong prior to my draining the oil and finding the water. could the water have been there the whole time?"
 
"Oil floats on water and the d

"Oil floats on water and the dipstick tube goes to the bottom of the pan. So if you start to syphon the oil out, any water will come out first.
How much water came out? If it was 3 gallons, you were running with water as a lubricant, and that means your engine will be shot. If it was a cupful or so you are likely OK.
Run it some more and check it again and often.

"i emptied the oil and refilled it and changed the filter, started the motor and let it run for a bit, pulled the filter and drained the oil and no water was in either place............. wierd........ i had not had the boat in the water prior to finding the water and had only run it a couple of times since getting the engine running."
 
It may have gotten in the oil

It may have gotten in the oil by way of a slow head gasket leak or something similar.
Or you might have ingested some water through the exhaust system if it dieseled on shutdown anywhere along the line.
I would just keep an eye on it closely and see if there is any further evidence.

"one thing i did notice was that once i changed the oil and filter, i had great oil pressure and then i looked at it again while it has been running for that same time and noticed that my pressure had dropped...... i am going to refill the motor again with oil and check it after running it again............."
