1989 120 evinrude water in lower unit. Gets super milkey super fast.Changed oil boat in water for about 20 minutes turned to solid milk yellow color. What shaft seals can i replace without dropping lower unit? will bearing carrier come out without taking prop shaft out? I am looking to replace what i can without dropping lower unit.If still gets water in will take to shop for pressure test and professional work. thanks What tools will i need

"The only seal you'll be a

"The only seal you'll be able to mess with is the prop seal with the lower unit still on. Unless I am mistaken the bearing carrier will not come out...on most motors the bearing housing is indexed to a pin the the lower unit housing...trying to pull the bearing carrier will break the pin. There should also be a o-ring on the bearing carrier housing you will not be able to access with out pulling the lower unit apart.

As far as tools, there are seal pullers special to OMC that could be purchased(expensive I believe)....you could try to fabricate your own...or if your very careful you could use a slide hammer with hooks.... With the lower unit off, you could pull the driveshaft seal in the same manner....the shift shaft seal is general punched out from inside the housing. I have found that this seal is often the most difficult and extreme care must be taken you dont damage the housing.

The shift rod o-ring is remove

The shift rod o-ring is removed with a sharp pointy tool and a new one is twisted in. No punching of any kind needs to be done.

The shift rod seals I was desc

The shift rod seals I was describing are a bushing with an o-ring in them....you would actually use a punch to drive the bushing out...and then drive a new bushing with o-ring in....

Thanks Phil. This I can do wit

Thanks Phil. This I can do without removeing lower unit? Where is the o ring? I messed up and posted same message twice could you plese check my question on the other message about thrust washer and gasket behind it. Your help is greatly appreciated.

"Nonsense, there is no punch required to change the shift rod o-ring."

I'm not going to argue or anything but and this depends on the year and all but the o ring sits in a bushing....if you want to put a new bushing in...you need to punch it out...OMC sells a special punch just for it...the o ring sits in a groove in the bushing...you could pic the o ring out and put a new o ring in...but if you want to put a new bushing in...you need to punch the old one out....the lower seal kit you buy includes the bushing and o ring

Don...the shift shaft seal and driveshaft seal you need to drop the lower unit to work on...the driveshaft seal sits under the lower pump housing...
