"I have a 1969 Merc 200 20 hp
"I have a 1969 Merc 200 20 hp that was given to me by my uncle. I am getting water in my lower unit. I changed my impeller, water pump base plate, and driveshaft seal (though I forgot the loctite). The LU had water in it before I made these changes.
My questions are:
1) Where my LU attaches to the exhaust housing, there are marks from previous prying. Mercury does not call for a gasket here, would liquid gasket or a gasket change the driveshaft distance too much?
2)I have a seloc manual and the lower unit seal replacement looks awfully intimidating, any tips here would be appreciated.
3)When my uncle had the motor, a guy "down da bayou" told him "dey jus pump dem ol lowa units fulla grease"! Is this a viable option or just asking for trouble?
Also the motor has never been in, nor will I put it in salt water, but I may use it in slightly brackish water.
Thanks for any help or advice."
