"I have an '88 open bow ba

"I have an '88 open bow bayliner 3.0 that appeared to have soft spots of wood on the floor aound the center walkways and behind the seats. I pulled the seats and took up the carpet and found that someone had previously placed 3/8" plywood over the existing floor. Most of this was rotten, so I pulled that up also, thinking I could easily replace that and have a new sturdy floor. Under that was the original floor that appeared to be at one time covered with a thin fiberglass coating. It had many cracks in it and appeared to to be also waterlogged and weak. I took a 2" hole saw through it into the foam to check, and the foam appears to be waterlogged. this is on both sides of the tank running front to back. Is there any way to dry this out and recover and reseal it? Or do I need to pull it all out and refill with foam under the floorboards? I have the seats all out and it is very easy to get to, but I need some ideas on which was to go from here. thanks for your help..."

"In re-reading this I realize

"In re-reading this I realize it has nothing to do with OMC, but it is part of an ongoing problem I have had with the boat. This forum has helped in many ways with the rebuild of my lower unit, getting the right pop size and pitch (14x17), and also getting the engine tuned, after all this, the boat has a hard time getting moving and appears to be very heavy. Thats when I found that the foam was waterlogged and appears to have added a ton of weight to the boat. So please help me any ideas again.... thanks in advance....."

sorry to tell you this its all

sorry to tell you this its all got to come out no way to save it its old when new probably would not soak up water good luck did 2 boats had the same problem my question to you is hows the stringers

"and where is the water coming

"and where is the water coming from that is soaking the foam?? check for holes( no matter how small) cracks, leaks, etc. 1 way you can check.....before you pull every thing out, fill the bilge with water while the boat is on the trailer (kinda likme filling a glass full of water) and check to see where the water escapes from. NOW I dont recomend this for everyone, this is only for the brave and some of the guyts may NOT like this method but it does work. I did this on my last boat to find the crack in 1 of my runners"

"thank you for your help. The

"thank you for your help. The boat had sat out side for a months before I bought it without a cover on it. I crawled under it and looked at everything, and didn't see any thing, but I like the idea of filling it with water and seeing what comes out. Thanks for your help. Any recommendations on what type of foam to put back in it?"

"any time Robert, you would ha

"any time Robert, you would have to double check a with a marine supply store, I would imagine that it is just regular foam that you would use to fill cracks and such. and that foam can be found at any hardware store in your area, it'll come in a tall spray can looking deal with a trigger and nozzle on it to get into tight spots. Is there any way you can post a pic or 2 to get a better idea of you are dealing with??"

I would check with an insulati

I would check with an insulating company for the foam. Those cans in the hardware store don't go very far. I had the bright idea of using that to make trees for my son's play at school. I used 3 cans (about $15) and had a tree about 18" tall. Used carpet tubes instead. If you can find a company that insulates steel buildings they should be able to help. Good Luck.

"Thanks again for all the grea

"Thanks again for all the great info. I pulled the flooring up and pulled all the foam out and ran it on the lake today a found a small hole about the size of a pencil punched through the underside that you could not see when it was on the trailer. One fiberglass repair kit and three hours later and I should be good and dry now. Another question, when I put the new floor down, do I just cover it all with a thin coat of fiberglass to seal it? (Except for the area where you store skis and such underneath in front of the tank)
Thanks again for all of your help and suggestions."

"Yes, coat both sides with re

"Yes, coat both sides with resin espec. the edges,it should be like you dipped it in resin,
Then decide if you are going to tuff coat it, or indoor/outdoor carpet( i recomend tuff coat or any epoxy sealer ) its easier to keep clean, just rinse it down and your done! you can also try awlgrip ( good stuff there too) and post up some pix of your progress it helps other DYI'ERs
with their projects. Good luck and keep us posted!"

"I will be putting it in the l

"I will be putting it in the lake this weekend to ensure that all is dry, and then working on putting in the new floor board and sealing it. I really appreciate all of your help.. this has been invaluable to me.... I took a bunch of pics and will be sending them soon,,,, Thanks again for your help. I didn't think I could do it, but its been really easy,, just takes a whole lot of patience to go slow, and a couple of hours every night after work to ensure all is correct, (plus I can't afford to pay someone.) Thanks again..."
