"hello I recently noticed that oil was leaking fron the upper gear case where the shifter goes in. when I checked the oil the it was milky and way over filled. I then pulled the bellow and saw that that was full of milky oil not a sludge. I was definately oil from the drive. the bellow is not torn or punctered in any way. my plan is to remove and reseal the upper. and disassemble the u joints and clean and inspect.

does this sound about right?

thanks, will"

"Hi Will
Change the gear selector seal, and when you pull the u/j replace the lip seal (the one held in with the big circlip) For the bellows to fill I would suggest the leg has been overfilled with oil, when running pressure builds up and the oil is blown thru this seal resulting in oil in the drive bellows. Refill the leg with oil when its back on the boat. Initially fill using the oil filler under the shift cover till it comes out . do this with the leg in the lifted/tilted position. secure the plug, use a couple of turns of PTFE tape on the thread also(it helps). Drop the leg and continue to fill using the dipstick hole. IMPORTANT... tne remainder may take time to fill so please be patient, the level should not exceed half way up the flat portion of the dipstick, no need to screw back to check, just dip , if it exceeds this the pressure will result and possibly various blown seals. It is worthy of note the oil only circulates around the leg when in gear (this is according to my volvo man here in the UK who rebuilds these things in his sleep!)"
