hello, my friend is working on a 2004 mercruiser 5.7 fuelinjected.the owner of the boat said it was running fine when he pulled to the dock but a little while later it would not restart.a few days later my friend found water in cylinders 2,4,6,8.he pulled the head and all 4 of those intake and exhaust runners are wet and rusty.both risers and manifolds were replaced with new ones from mercruiser 3 months ago.any help appreciated.thank you.

You might have a water leak at the manifold/ riser joint that would allow water to get into all of those cylinders.

I've seen "good" gasketed joints leak in similar connections.

I don't think tuliped valve stem could cause it, but who knows

I doubt that you'll see a tulipped valve stem!
If anything is tulipped, it would be the valve face itself.

Chris suggested using a straight edge across the valve stems (rocker arms loosened and set to the side) in order to see if one valve stem sat higher than the rest.
If so, that would indicate that the tulipped area allowed the valve to sit deeper into it's seat..... hence the taller stem!

I’d check the newly installed parts carefully, especially the sealing surfaces for the gasket. Does this engine have the wet joint or dry joint system?

According to the OP the head is off the engine.
