Water getting into foot

"I have a 1964 40 hp Johnson R

"I have a 1964 40 hp Johnson RD-26S. I put a new seal kit in the foot, but water is still getting in. I tore it back apart, and noticed that the driveshaft is grooved pretty badly. Any ideas on how to fix this? I think maybe that water is getting up past the driveshaft seal under the waterpump housing because of the wear on the driveshaft. I am frustrated!"

"I have taken lightly grooved

"I have taken lightly grooved driveshafts and chucked them in my drill-press. Spin it slow and use crocus cloth and polished the seal seating area. If it is not major, you can get it fairly smooth and the surface will be improved for the seal to work. If it is real deep groove, you have nothing to lose so rough it up and then apply J.B. Weld at the groove. Then file it down in the drill press with an hand file then final smoothing with fine crocus cloth. JB, when applied correctly, will last a long time under that seal. It is worth a try!"

"Yes, you are correct. I have

"Yes, you are correct. I have nothing to lose! The driveshaft is discontinued. I thought there might be an aftermarket one, but no. I've been looking for a used one, but I may as well just try and fix this one. I can wobble it pretty good in the pinion gear and you can see where it's been grinding on the seal edge, and also on the nettle bearing underneath which, surprisingly, looks in good shape, but I don't know how. It looks like someone ground it down about 10 thousandths in a lathe there. I will definitely try it. Thank you so much for your help!"

"I will definitely. I just no

"I will definitely. I just noticed that the driveshaft seal on top of the gear case could not have been seated all the way. I don't know how i missed it, but there was a huge burr there which made a "ledge" which was blocking part of the seal seat. There's no way it was fully seated. I think maybe the old one had spun and dug a groove there. I have cleaned all that up. Hopefully, some silicone around the seal outside edge will make up for it. I put a picture of my driveshaft on here.
