"Hello, I do not have the means($)(facilities) to pull the engine to change the water flapper valves(1). I was told that a retrofit kit is available to relocate the valve higher(near the riser)(on the down side). Whoever designed this should be flogged! Any thoughts of just running it without them? Thanks, Cris Fort Worth Tx."

??? don't need to pull the engine to change the flapper valves on any Mercruiser I've had...but we don't know the year or model you have

"Hello, Mine is a 1981 SeaRay 207 with a 260 v8. Trust me, there is NO room between the bellhousing and exhaust "y",.. the manual and the dealership say "yep, pull the motor". There was a design change in 1982 or so, eliminating this problem.....mine is a 1981. So, I'd even consider pulling the drive vs. the whole motor if it will allow access to the "y". This is along the lines of the infamous having to pull the motor to change a spark plug deal. Cris"

Pulling the motor is not such

Pulling the motor is not such a big deal if you have the space and a good hoist.
There is no way I can think of to change the Y pipe without puling the engine.

"Yes Rod, if.......but as I said......pulling the motor IS a big deal. The dealer wants $95 per hour.....I have neither a "good hoist" or the $. I will seriously consider scrapping the boat. The boat didn't cost much($2500)and is not worth much. See? If there is a retrofit(see above) that's what I'm looking for.....Thanks, Cris"

Look for a local independent m

Look for a local independent marine mechanic to do the work. Their rate for the job may be lower since they don't always have a larger overhead as a dealer. Simple engine removal & reinstall should be listed as a "flat rate" charge plus misc. materials. Addt'l "what ifs" should be spelled out. I was quoted five hours total labor the last time mine was pulled for a new coupler.

"another less desireable alt.

"another less desireable alt. would be to have an exhaust shop run it through the hull. be sure to block off compleatly the y pipe or u might sink.
downside would be a much louder boat, but you would see more power and some fuel econ. increase.

be sure to use flappers or water ingestion is sure to happen."

I just put elec. operated stainless exhaust on mine and can choose between through the hull or
the y pipe. Through the hull rocks for power!
I went to a 23 pitch prop. and still easily see
4800 rpm when through the hull is used. from a 21
prop. I also got another 10 mph out of it.

"Kurt, if you gained 10 mph just from thru hulls, I suspect you have an old flapper jammed in your Y pipe or something like that restricting the outlet."
