water entering engine

Could someone help me with river water entering the engine? I have a aq135a inboard and when I pull the plugs I get water running out

Never heard of an AQ135A, so I assume you are talking about an AQ125A or an AQ145A. If water is entering the cylinders, it could be due to the timing belt having jumped several teeth, but you probably would also experience a significant loss of power. Other reasons could be a perforated exhaust manifold, a cracked head or a blown head gasket. Also, if you have a 270 or 275 outdrive, or if you have an exhaust bellows with a flapper valve, the flapper valve may be gone. An alternative to replacing the expensive flapper on a 250 or 275 would be installing an exhaust bellows with flapper, like this one

sorry it's 131 engine and yes I think it needs a flapper valve but everyone tells me there is no such thing in a 1985 application. The head has been pressure tested and a new gasket installed.Would there have been a flapper valve update because of this problem?

I believe the AQ131A came packaged with the 275D drive, and that drive has a flapper in the exhaust outlet. In any case, if you are running your boat on a river, there will be times when the current may exercise positive pressure on the exhaust, and that could cause water backing into the cylinders when the engine is idling.

If yo have a 275 drive and it has no flapper on the exhaust outlet, I would start by installing one and take it from there. And if you happen to have a 280 or a 290, I would try installing an exhaust bellows with a flapper valve.

O.K. But I'm having a hard time for someone to get me one because the volvo parts guys all say that there wasn't one available for this application.

Do you have a 275 sterndrive? If so, the exhaust outlet (854061) should be available from your VP dealer. They don't sell the flap separately, but rather the whole exhaust outlet. Check this link:

If you have the 275 and you have the exhaust outlet but you are missing the rubber flap, you should be able to make one yourself.

If you have either a 275 witht he exhaust outlet but the rubber flap is missing, or you have a 280 or a 290 outdrive, then you can install an exhaust bellows with rubber flapper. I already gave you the link for this part on a previous post.
