I have a 1990 740A VP DP - raw

I have a 1990 740A VP DP - raw water cooled engine (7.4 liter) Last season at the end I realized that each time I tightened my belts that they would loosen in a day or two afterwards. Then I grabbed the pulleys where the belts circulate around the front of the engine and it was wobbly up and down or side to side. It that a sign it needs to be replaced or is there another fix?? Thanks.

"Are the belts just getting loose or are they rather getting worn? If the pulleys are pitted, they will eat the belts in no time. I have seen this problem many times in the VPs with single V-belt. If the pulleys are pitted, consider replacing them with new ones and installing a new belt."

The pulleys themselves are not

The pulleys themselves are not pitted or worn - it is the whole unit behind it - it can be moved at little - shouldn't that be firm and not able to move - if that is the water circulator then does it need to be replaced or is there another fix.

"If you are talking about the sea water pump being wobbly (part 10), that is not uncommon in those engines and it is usually not a problem.

The unit at the bottom (behind the pulley) is the vibration damper, and it is attached to the crankshaft by means of the bolt (24), the both the pump and the pulley are attached to the vibration damper by means of 3 screws (27). If the unit is wobbly, you may want to check that all the bolts are tight.

If what you find wobbly is the water circulation pump, that could mean the bearing is on its way out, but they normally do leak before that happens. It could also be that either of the 4 screws (part 8) is loose.

The belts are tightened by first releasing, then moving and tightening the alternator. If they are becoming loose but the alternator is tight, look for black dust from the belts around the alternator. If you find it, I can almost guarantee that at least one of the pulleys is pitted and eating the belts, and more often than not it is the alternator pulley what causes the problem."
