Was this good advice for a rough running mariner??

I am experiencing the rough idle with a 150hp 2 stroke mariner not sure of year, motor had 175 hours on it when I bought it along with a 82 sanger bubbledeck, (not original motor) the gas that was in it was in there since last summer, I added some more with mixture and took it out for the first time last sunday, ran out like a champ but the idle got rougher and rougher thru the day where it would barely stay running when I loaded it up, but again would run out like a champ.
I have been told probably clogged low idle jets? and was told to try this.... take three gallons of gas/oil mix and add 6 ounces of "gumout" carberator cleaner and run the engine at idle for a half hour or longer if needed, my concern is that amount is way more than the 21 gallons to 12 ounce ratio that is stated on the bottle, could this mix have adverse affects on my engine??? if this doesnt work it is off to the shop I suppose and about $240.00 to the poorer!! I should have treated the gas before I took it out, live and learn....
 
I don't know anything aboutthese motors but I think your guess on clogged low speed jets is correct.You can try the sea foam and power tune but I think it's time for a carb rebuild,and as gas goes off new fuel is the way to go even with treatment in it,I've forgotten the name of the stuff.DOH!
 
You didn't say what year the motor is or if it was carbed or efi. I would run a very strong mix of SEAFOAM. I have never used gumout that way , but used SeaFoam many times. 3 gal premix to 1 pint/16oz of SeaFoam. Actually I used 16 OZ SeaFoam to 3/4 gal premix gas to decarb my old 200hp merc, it will run ok and clean things. Might even consider using Chevron fuel injector cleaner. They both do a good job of cleaning, but it the small orifices are clogged, it will take a soaking to clear them.
How are the spark plugs? Are you running pre-mix 50-1?

I am really not sure what year the motor was, I am thinking late 80? wish I could post a picture here.... The gumout he handed me is a fuel injector/carburator cleaner, so maybe I am ok, have never heard of seafoam other than this webstie, not sure if it is available local, may have to order... I am mixing 50 to 1, if this doesn work I may just bring it in and have it checked out, dump the tanks and get some new gas if needed.
 
I know know what you are expecting for a smooth idle on a late 80 V6, my 1989 200 hp, (same block probably) never did idle really smooth, but over 20 years of service it never did die at idle, but definitely not real smooth, my 2008/2009 225 Honda runs so smooth, it is hard to tell it is running, (quieter than my 09 Yamaha T9.9).
You can get SeaFoam at Waly-Mart or any NAPPA auto parts store. It has been around for 50 years. Since you already have the Gumouty6, try it.:D
 
Well, I went to Walmart, found the seafoam, thanks for the tip.. I will try the 3 gallon/16 ounce seafoam first, if it doesn't work I will do the 3/4 to 16 ounce seafoam, does that sound like a plan or should I go for the gusto?? after that should I dump all the gas out of the boat or is there a treatment I can use to run these tanks dry with no ill affect? sea foam? thanks

There is no need to run the gas out. Lots of people run SeaFoam in the gas all the time as it also acts as a preservative to keep the gas from going bad.
 
Well, I tried the seafoam, and I am pretty sure it worked!!!
Started out running rough as a cobb but over about fifteen minutes started running even, wouldn't say smooth, kinda reminded me of a harley. but it quit dying and ran the whole 30 minutes fairly well at an even idle, so I have old gas in the tanks, if I apply the seafoam will it make this gas acceptable??? till I can run them out?
And should I go ahead and use the seafoam everytime I fill for insurance? thanks for the help!!

Gas/seafoam ratio?
