warning horn self check???

1987 evinrude 150. my horn doesnt beep when i turn the key on but it will sound when i ground the tan wire so i know it works. should it beep when i start the motor? why doesnt it?

the horn should sound when you turn the key to power on, this is a self check, to ensure the horn would work if the motor overheated., so I am thinking yes it should sound on power on.

so why doesnt it sound on start up?

could be bad wiring in the remote control box, open the box and check to see if you are getting power to the horn when you turn the key to the on setting.

Could also be a bad horn.
