I have a '74 Vanguard boat with a '74 Eninrude 50hp outboard, could someone please tell me how the warm up lever is supposed to work, is it like a choke? Thanks!

the lever is not a choke it lets you raise the idle up for a cold start. I think on yours the choke is on the key you push it in to make it work

Ok thanks, I just bought the boat and I tried to start it recently and it wouldn't start but I wasn't using the warmup lever. Do you have to lift up on it?

You lift the warm up lever.--------------make sure the manual choke on the lower cowling us in the middle position.---Operate the toggle switch for choke and turn key to crank it over.

Just consider what the warm up lever does and it will take the mystery out of it. With the control in neutral, the throttle is set at slow idle. But you need to kick the throttle up a bit to get it started and warmed up enough to keep running at idle. If you were to kick the throttle up a bit, you would have to put it in gear to do that. Obviously, that would not be a pretty picture as you run over the pier or another boat. Enter the "Warm-up Lever". It allows you to give it some throttle without putting it in gear.

The choke is a whole different issue. Controlled by a toggle switch or push-to-choke key switch.
